The regional rate spread

A senior developer's day rate in London, Amsterdam or the Nordics sits well above one in Poland, Portugal or Romania, where a deep engineering talent pool has made nearshoring popular. Cheaper isn't automatically better value: time zones, language, communication and code quality all feed the total. The right question is cost to a reliable result, not the lowest rate on the quote.

GDPR is part of the build, not an afterthought

Any product touching EU residents' data falls under GDPR, and retrofitting it is expensive. Build it in from the start:

• Collect only the data you need, and know where it's stored.
• Have a lawful basis for processing and a clear way to honour deletion.
• Put a data processing agreement in place with any vendor that touches the data.
• Design privacy in by default, rather than bolting it on before launch.

Add the EU AI Act if there's AI

If your product uses AI and serves EU users, the EU AI Act applies alongside GDPR, and it reaches non-EU providers too. Classify each AI use by risk tier early, since the high-risk obligations carry real documentation and oversight work. Scoping it upfront costs far less than reworking a finished feature.

Keeping the cost sensible
